The school counselor at St. Pius X offers optional counseling services to all students through classroom guidance lessons, small group lessons, and individual counseling sessions.
Classroom guidance lessons are focused on the school’s virtue for each month and promote the social, emotional, spiritual, and academic growth of each child. These lessons are created in a developmentally appropriate manner and address topics such as coping skills, conflict resolution, building healthy friendships, showing respect for self and others, kindness, and empathy.
Opportunities to participate in small group lessons are provided throughout the school year. These groups meet once a week for 4-6 weeks and focus on specific areas that students wish to improve in. Students are chosen for groups through referrals from parents/guardians or teachers, and permission forms are sent home prior to beginning each group.
Individual counseling services are offered to students with concerns that may interfere with their ability to focus during school when requested by the student, parents/guardians, or staff members. Examples may include difficult transitions, grief and loss, academic concerns, peer relationships, and changes or challenges at home. These sessions are brief and solution-focused, and the counselor will provide additional resources for further support when appropriate. Permission is requested for these services.
