3rd Grade Curriculum:
ELAR
As students enter the intermediate grades, they make the significant shift from learning to read, to reading to learn. We facilitate this by using the HMH Into Reading curriculum. We place a strong emphasis on explaining our thinking, supporting our ideas by citing text evidence, and interacting meaningfully with texts.
Our whole group instruction is supported by small group reading lessons. Individual reading assessments are conducted at intervals throughout the year, and reading groups are formed to provide targeted instruction where students need it the most. Additionally, students participate in literature circles which provide opportunities for them to extend their thinking and dive into more challenging texts.
Math
We explore a number of concepts including geometry, fractions, multiplication and division, place value, and addition and subtraction with regrouping. We utilize the HMH Go Math textbook, as well as supplemental materials as needed. Whenever possible, we integrate other subjects and engage in project based learning.
Science
We utilize HMH Science Fusion to introduce students to new scientific concepts. Students engage in experiments, make predictions and observations, and learn to approach problems like a scientist.
Religion
Students learn about their faith through weekly Mass attendance, and through their textbook, Our Sunday Visitor - Alive in Christ. We explore essential questions, engage in discussions, pray together, and participate in traditions such as a living rosary, and stations of the cross.
Social Studies
Our textbook, My World Texas, forms the backbone of our social studies curriculum. We learn about communities, culture, government, economics, and geography. We engage in projects throughout the year including a producer/consumer business simulation, a Minecraft community building project, and a community heroes living museum project
